About LDN Blackjack

The card game London grew up playing

What is LDN Blackjack?

LDN Blackjack is a free online multiplayer card game based on the version of Blackjack (also known as Switch, Crazy Eights, or Two-Ball) played across London for generations. If you grew up in London, you almost certainly played this game at school, on the bus, or at a friend's house.

Unlike casino Blackjack (which is a completely different game about getting to 21), London Blackjack is a shedding card game. The goal is simple: get rid of all your cards before anyone else. But with power cards like Black Jacks that force your opponent to pick up 5 cards, or Aces that change the suit, every turn is a tactical decision.

The London Rules

Every playground and every group of friends has their own "house rules" for this game. Some people play that 2s pick up 2, others say 3. Some allow Jokers, others don't. The arguments about the rules are almost as much fun as the game itself.

LDN Blackjack uses a specific ruleset that we've found to be the most common across London. We call these the "London House Rules" and they include:

  • Black Jack picks up 5 - The most iconic rule. Play a Jack of Clubs or Spades and your opponent must draw 5 cards.
  • Red Jack cancels - A Jack of Hearts or Diamonds cancels any pickup stack, saving the next player.
  • 2s pick up 2 and stack - Play a 2 and the next player picks up 2. But they can play their own 2 to pass it on, adding to the total.
  • Mixed stacking - You can stack 2s on Black Jacks and vice versa. Play a 2 on a Black Jack and the next player picks up 7.
  • 8 skips a turn - Play an 8 and the next player misses their go.
  • King reverses - Kings change the direction of play. In a 2-player game, this means you get another turn.
  • Ace changes suit - Play an Ace on anything and declare a new suit for the next player to follow.
  • Queen must be covered - You cannot finish the game on a Queen. You must play another card on top of it.
  • Joker is the ultimate wild - A Joker can be played on anything and becomes any card you choose (both rank and suit).
  • Last Card declaration - When you're down to one card, you must declare "Last Card" or face a penalty. This declaration lasts for 2 turns before expiring.

Why We Built This

There are plenty of card game apps out there, but none of them play by London rules. Every version we tried had different rules - American rules, European rules, or some generic version that didn't feel right.

We wanted to build the definitive version of the game we all grew up playing. No casino gimmicks, no pay-to-win mechanics, no complicated account setups. Just enter your email, get a code, and start playing within seconds.

LDN Blackjack is built for speed. Games are real-time over WebSockets, so you see your opponent's moves the moment they happen. No waiting for turn notifications. No refreshing the page. Just fast, fluid gameplay on any device.
