Tell someone you play Blackjack online and they will immediately assume you are gambling. They picture a green felt table, a dealer, and the nervous thrill of trying to hit 21 without going bust. That is Casino Blackjack (also called 21 or Pontoon), and it has absolutely nothing to do with the game we play.

Casino Blackjack (21)

Casino Blackjack is a banking game. You play against the house (the dealer), not against other players. Each player receives two cards and decides whether to "hit" (take another card) or "stand" (keep what they have). The goal is to get your card values as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. Face cards are worth 10, Aces can be 1 or 11.

It is fundamentally a gambling game. There is no discard pile, no matching suits, no power cards, no stacking. The only similarity to London Blackjack is the name and the fact that both use a standard deck of cards.

London Blackjack (Switch / Crazy Eights)

London Blackjack is a shedding game. You start with 7 cards and take turns playing cards that match the top of the discard pile by suit or rank. The goal is to empty your hand completely. Special power cards add chaos: 2s force pickups, Black Jacks force massive pickups, 8s skip turns, Kings reverse direction, and Aces change the suit.

It is a social game played between friends, not a gambling game played against a casino. There is no money involved (unless you are playing for forfeits, which is between you and your mates). The skill comes from card management, timing, and reading your opponents.

Why the Same Name?

The name collision likely comes from the Black Jack card itself. In London Blackjack, the Jack of Clubs and Jack of Spades (the "black" Jacks) are the most powerful cards in the deck, forcing the next player to pick up 5 cards. The game became associated with these cards, and "Blackjack" stuck as the name.

In casino Blackjack, the name comes from an old bonus payout: if you were dealt the Ace of Spades plus a black Jack (Jack of Clubs or Spades), you received a special 10-to-1 payout. Casinos dropped the bonus, but the name remained.

Two completely different games, both named after the Jack of Clubs and Spades, causing confusion for decades.
