Switch looks like a luck-based game from the outside. Draw some cards, play what matches, hope for the best. But watch experienced players and you will notice they win consistently - not because of luck, but because of dozens of small decisions made correctly throughout the game.

Beginner Tips

1. Never Play a Power Card You Do Not Have To

New players often play their Black Jack, Ace, or Joker the first chance they get. This is almost always wrong. Power cards are assets - they have a higher value at certain moments in the game than others. A Black Jack played when your opponent has 10 cards wastes most of its damage. The same Black Jack played when they have 2 cards left might make them pick up 5 and lose the game.

2. Learn What "Last Card" Means for Your Strategy

The Last Card declaration is not just a rule - it is information. When your opponent declares Last Card, you know exactly how many cards they have (one). This changes everything. Play your most disruptive cards immediately. Change the suit to something you know they cannot match. Hit them with a 2 or Black Jack to force a pickup and a new declaration.

3. Sort Your Hand by Suit

Before strategising, organise your hand so you can see what suits and ranks you hold. The Sort button in online Switch does this automatically. Knowing you hold 4 Hearts means you should strongly consider changing to Hearts with your Ace.

4. Declare Last Card the Moment You Reach One Card

Forgetting to declare Last Card is the most painful way to lose in Switch. Make it a reflex: the moment you play your second-to-last card, press Last Card. Do it before you even think about the consequences. The penalty for forgetting is drawing a card when you were about to win.

Intermediate Tips

5. Save Your Red Jack for a Real Emergency

A Red Jack cancels any pickup stack. This makes it the most valuable defensive card in the game. Playing a Red Jack when the stack is only a 2 (2 cards) wastes most of its value. Save it for when someone drops a Black Jack or, better, when a stack of 2s and Black Jacks has built to 7+ cards.

6. Use Your Ace to Change to Your Best Suit

When you play an Ace, declare the suit where you hold the most cards. If you have four Clubs, change to Clubs. You may then be able to play all four on your next turns without having to draw or pass. An Ace that enables 3 consecutive plays is far more valuable than an Ace used just to play a card.

7. In 2-Player Games, Use Kings Aggressively

In a 2-player game, a King gives you another turn. This is a free play. The best use of a King in a 2-player game is as part of a combination: King (extra turn), then Ace (change suit to your best suit), then play multiple cards of that suit. You may be able to play 4-6 cards across those two turns.

8. Track the Black Jacks

There are only 2 Black Jacks in the deck (Jack of Clubs and Jack of Spades). If you have seen both played already, you know your opponent cannot hit you with one. This means you can play your Red Jack as a normal card if you need to (though this is still risky if there are Jokers unaccounted for).

Advanced Tips

9. Do Not Counter a Stack If You Are Winning

If your opponent plays a 2 at you and you have a counter (another 2, a Black Jack, or a Joker), you do not have to use it. If you are far ahead in cards and they only have 3 cards left, it might be better to pick up the 2 cards and use your counter card to attack them on your next turn instead.

10. The Queen Trap

Play a Queen followed immediately by a power card (you must cover the Queen in the same turn). Your opponent now has to deal with the power card without the warning they would normally have. Play a Queen followed by a Black Jack and they face 5 cards from what looked like a harmless Queen play.

11. End Planning

When you are down to 3-4 cards, plan your exit. Check that your final card is not a Queen (cannot finish on one). Check that your final card is not a King in a 2-player game (cannot finish on one). Arrange your plays so your last card is an Ace or a simple number card. An Ace is the ideal last card - it can be played on almost anything.

12. The Joker Is Worth More as a Counter Than as an Attack

The Joker can be declared as any card. Using it to become a Black Jack (adding 5 to a stack) is useful. But using it to become a Red Jack (cancelling a stack of 7, 9, or 12 cards) is better. Save your Joker for defensive use - as soon as a stack starts building, mentally ring-fence it as your escape card.

Practise Against the Bot
