How to Win at London Blackjack: 10 Tips from Experienced Players
Stop losing to your mates. These proven strategies will improve your win rate immediately.
London Blackjack might look like a game of luck, but experienced players win consistently. The difference between a 40% win rate and a 60% win rate comes down to decision-making, timing, and knowing when to be aggressive versus when to hold back.
1. Do Not Play Power Cards Early
New players throw down their Black Jack or Ace on the first turn they can. This is almost always wrong. Power cards are most valuable in the late game when your opponent has fewer options to counter them. Hold your Black Jack until your opponent has 2-3 cards left and watch them pick up 5.
2. Count the Key Cards
There are only 2 Black Jacks, 2 Red Jacks, 4 Twos, and 2 Jokers in the deck. If you have seen both Black Jacks already played, you know your opponent cannot hit you with one. If three out of four 2s are in the discard pile, the chances of facing a stacked pickup are minimal. This basic counting transforms your decision-making.
3. Change Suit to What You Have Most Of
When you play an Ace, change to the suit where you hold the most cards. This gives you multiple consecutive plays. If you have three Hearts in your hand, change to Hearts and you might be able to play all three on your next turns.
4. Save Your Red Jack
A Red Jack cancels any pickup stack. This makes it the most valuable defensive card in the game. Never play it as a regular card just because it matches. Save it for when someone drops a Black Jack or stacks 2s on you.
5. Use Kings Strategically in 2-Player Games
In a 2-player game, a King gives you an extra turn. This is essentially a free play. Combine it with a suit change (King then Ace) or use it to rapidly shed cards when you are close to winning.
6. Declare Last Card Early
Press the Last Card button the moment you play down to one card. If you forget and play your final card without declaring, you pick up a penalty card and lose your winning position. Make it a habit - play your second-to-last card, immediately hit Last Card.
7. Watch What Your Opponent Draws
If your opponent draws a card and immediately plays something, the suit they played is likely what they drew. If they draw and cannot play, they are stuck on the current suit. Use this information when choosing which suit to change to with your Ace.
8. Do Not Finish on a Queen
You cannot win by playing a Queen as your last card - it must always be covered. If your last two cards include a Queen, plan your cover card carefully. The ideal endgame is to have your Queen as your second-to-last card, covered by a simple number card.
9. Use the Joker as a Red Jack
The Joker can become any card. Its highest-value use is usually declaring it as a Red Jack to cancel a massive pickup stack. A Joker used to cancel a 7-card pickup is worth far more than a Joker used to play a random 5 of Hearts.
10. Play the Player, Not Just the Cards
Pay attention to how many cards your opponent has. If they are down to 2 cards, hit them with everything you have. If they have 10+ cards, you can afford to play conservatively and save your power cards for the endgame.
