But there is another Blackjack - the social card game played at schools, on buses, and at kitchen tables across the UK. It has nothing to do with gambling or getting to 21. What is Blackjack (the Social Game)?

Blackjack the social card game is a shedding game. It is also known as Switch, Crazy Eights, Two-Ball, or Last Card depending on where you grew up. The goal is to be the first player to empty your hand of cards. It gets its name from the Jack of Clubs and Jack of Spades - the "black Jacks" - which are the most powerful cards in the game.

It is not a gambling game. There is no betting, no dealer advantage, and no counting cards to beat the house. It is a competitive social game played purely for fun.

How to Play Blackjack the Social Game

Setup

Shuffle one standard deck of 52 cards plus two Jokers. Deal 7 cards to each player, face down. Place the remaining cards face-down as the draw pile. Turn the top card face-up to start the discard pile.

Basic Gameplay

Players take turns playing cards onto the discard pile. Each card played must match the top card by either suit or rank. If you cannot play, you draw a card from the draw pile. If the drawn card is playable, you may play it immediately. Otherwise, your turn ends and play passes to the next player.

The Power Cards

These cards have special effects beyond simply being played:

2 (Pick Up Two): Forces the next player to draw 2 cards. Can be countered by another 2 (adding 2 more to the total), a Black Jack (adding 5 more), or a Joker.

Black Jack - Jack of Clubs or Spades (Pick Up Five): Forces the next player to draw 5 cards. This is the most powerful attack card in the game. Can be countered by a Red Jack (cancels), another Black Jack (adds 5), a 2 (adds 2), or a Joker.

Red Jack - Jack of Hearts or Diamonds (Cancel): Cancels any pickup stack, no matter how large. Playing a Red Jack ends the pickup chain and the next player continues normally.

8 (Skip): The next player loses their turn. Multiple 8s can be played together to skip multiple players.

King (Reverse): Reverses the direction of play. In a 2-player game, gives you an extra turn.

Ace (Change Suit): Can be played on any card. Declare which suit the next player must follow.

Queen (Must Cover): Cannot be your final card. Must always play another card on top of a Queen in the same turn.

Joker (Ultimate Wild): Can be played on anything. Declare exactly what card it becomes (rank and suit). Most valuable when used to cancel a large pickup stack by declaring it as a Red Jack.

Stacking

Pickup penalties can be stacked and passed between players. If someone plays a 2 and you play another 2, the next player faces 4 cards. Add a Black Jack and they face 9 cards. This chain continues until someone cannot counter and must pick up the entire total.

Last Card

When you play down to one card, you must declare "Last Card" before playing your penultimate card. Winning without declaring results in a penalty card.

Winning

First player to empty their hand wins. Cannot finish on a Queen (must cover it) or a King in 2-player games.
